Cooper's Hawk
Accipiter cooperii
If you see a small hawk on campus—much smaller than a red-tailed or a red-shouldered hawk—chances are it’s a Cooper’s. This one is perched just across from an acorn woodpecker nest cavity, causing some alarm among the woodpeckers. You can hear its rapid call in this recording—along with the quiet hoot of a fledgling great horned owl, and some treefrogs in the ravine.
